| What is Arvigo massage?
Named after Dr. Rosita Arvigo, The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® (ATMAT) is an external, non-invasive manipulation using only hands to reposition reproductive organs and improve blood flow to digestive organs. This modality blends traditional Mayan methods used by midwives and healers with Western techniques, creating a safe, gentle way to open up the body's Five Flows and relieve a host of chronic reproductive and digestive disorders. It is very different from a typical full-body massage. (See FAQs)

1. What are the Five Flows?
The Five Flows are
- Blood (Arterial)
- Blood (Veinous)
- Nerve impulse
- Chi/Chu'lel (life energy)
2. What can I expect at my first session?
As noted above, ATMAT is not a typical, full-body massage. The full working time is concentrated on the abdomen with a few minutes of supportive work on the legs (unless I decide otherwise after intake.)
When you schedule your appointment, you'll be asked for your email address. I will send you an intake form in PDF form, which you will need to print out and fill before arriving. At your first session, we'll spend about 15-25 minutes going over the intake form, which includes an extensive health history. Once this is done, I'll leave the room so that you can undress and get on the table under the top sheet, face up. When I return, I'll begin working on your belly from pelvis to ribs (with some leg work.) Your chest and shoulders will be draped for warmth and modesty with a towel while your belly is exposed. (If you are too uncomfortable with having your belly exposed, let me know ahead of time and this can typically be accomodated.)
After completing the anterior (front) portion, I will have you turn over, face down. I will then work from mid-back to hips with some work on the legs as needed. This work includes gentle correcton of pelvic, sacral, and coxxygeal (tailbone) alignment.
At the end of the session, I will have you turn face up one more time to teach you a self-care routine to do at home, and give you additional self-care guidance. A copy of instructions for this routine and other instructions/recommendations will also be emailed to you after your first session.
For maximum effectiveness, I recommend committing to a minimum of four Arvigo professional sessions over three months: Twice the first month and monthly thereafter. This is in addition to and not instead of home self-care.
3. How important is my at-home Self Care?
Extremely important. I may only see you once a month, but you see you every day. You will see results over time if you only do full professional treatments. You will see more, better, more consistent results faster if you continue the work at home.
4. What do you recommend for vaginal/perineal steaming?
I'm a big fan of just using my toilet and a ceramic bowl I don't care about. While the herbs are steeping, go ahead and use the toilet for its usual purposes first, flush, and brush the toilet bowl. Warming the ceramic bowl inside and out with hot tap water will keep the infusion from losing steam too fast. When you're ready to go, lift the toilet seat, place the warmed ceramic bowl in the toilet bowl, add the herb infusion, lower the seat, sit, wrap up, meditate for twenty minutes. When you're done, stay wrapped up so you don't lose the heat and either flush the infusion or (my much preferred method) return the herbs and infusion to the Earth by pouring them out in the garden or yard with gratitude for their healing gifts.
If you don't want to use the toilet, go to the flea market, garage sales, Craigslist, etc. and find a chair you're comfortable in. Cut a hole in the seat while leaving enough seat for you to comfortably sit on, and place the bowl under this hole when you steam. Enjoy!
